Picture 2Life can change in an instant.

Mine did.

After building a successful speaking career around my book Drive Yourself Happy, and my involvement with Circle Connections, I discontinued my professional travels, minimized work endeavors, and took time off. It was not the ideal financial time to shift my focus, especially in a down-turning economical time, yet oddly it is was the perfect moment.

I was not sipping some exotic drink on a beach somewhere warm and beautiful, but instead I felt compelled to make myself available to my grandnephew, Connor, barely two. It felt necessary to me to serve him and his family as they maneuvered Connor’s healing journey when he was abruptly diagnosed with A. L. L. leukemia. Connor spent a year-plus at Children’s Hospital in Seattle and underwent a bone-marrow transplant, finally returning to his home to Alaska.

Picture 1Connor is now almost five, and at this moment is cancer free, however I will never be the same, and learned in an unforgettable way  the power of leadership modeled by my niece, Alicia, Connor’s mom. Connor taught us all that every day is precious and the petty things we thought mattered so much really didn’t.

Many women are everyday leaders for their families, doing ordinary things in extraordinary ways. Some are called to extend their leadership skills to include local and global involvement, and others make a huge contribution by facing the  everyday hurdles with incredible grace and humility. All are incredible agents of positive change.

Join us this Monday  on our BlogTalk Radio show as we share a conversation with Alicia Dunham about the leadership lessons learned on this journey with Connor
