Join us for our next show as we explore expanding the power and authenticity of our leadership through the Seque method:
January 25th, 2010 ~ Transforming Leadership with the Seque
On this show, Hamilton Hayes, co-founder of Collective Intelligence Solutions, joins us to talk about transforming leadership with the Segue. Ham has been working on easy-to-learn and use processes for conducting highly effective group conversations, collaboration and transforming leadership. Community groups, government and business are all facing increasing challenges in how they create, communicate and sustain collaborative, creative and coherent efforts. The Segue, developed by Collective Intelligence Solutions co-founders, Hamilton Hayes and Robert Bystrom, is a group communications protocol designed to meet those challenges. Our mission is teaching people how to think together better and utilize the full capability of their combined intelligence.

Open Question – Segue™

What is a Segue?
A Segue is a method for increasing the experiential velocity and power of group communications, problem solving and co-creation. Based on the concept of question driven thinking, it is a well defined protocol that is easy to learn and implement in a variety of situations and venues. It has been successfully used in both business and
public service/community venues.
Purposes of the Segue:
For a group or team, to enable a higher level of sustainable collective intelligence, on-demand. Also, to enable trust and openness with team members and colleagues. For individual participants, to provide an environment for and experience of contribution and collaboration that is easy-to-use, open, non-judgmental and helpful to participants in self-identifying their personal and group value systems.
Organization of the Segue:
A Segue session is conducted in small groups, typically up to 7 or so people. If more people are present, holding multiple circles is preferred over retaining a single larger circle. This increases the opportunity to participate. The results of multiple circles can then be shared at the end of a session.
Participants are physically organized in a small circle of chairs. No tables are present. Note taking is distracting and discouraged. Instead, a scribe is provided, or a recording is made of the session for later documentation.
Each participant will be asking the person next to them (right or left) a series of three questions per the Segue script below. The person that was the respondent will then take on the role of questioner for the next participant. This process will continue around the circle for 3 or more rounds.
Other notes:
Eliminate external distractions and interruptions to the extent possible during a Segue session.
A Segue round can last from 20 minutes to an hour
The Segue facilitator is not a direct participant in the session. Facilitators help the group setup the question to be addressed in the session. They also gently make sure that the participants follow the protocol. They may be the scribe for the session, and they guide the post session review and integration. It is recommended that the facilitator receive
some training in the use of the Segue.

Questions for setting up a Segue™
1. What is important?
2. What is the problem or opportunity you want to address?
3. How can you frame the problem or opportunity as a “what-is-one-thing” question?
4. What will you do with all the answers?
Rules for conducting a Segue™
1. Make eye contact with the other person.
2. Consider every voice as equally important.
3. Stick to the script, including using the other person’s name and “Thank you” after the third response.
4. No cross-talk or comments, even of approval.
5. Respond and pass it on: speak directly the essence of your response. Be brief in your response. No paragraphs.
6. You may pass if you want more time to be with the question.
[Name], what is one thing ____________________________________________________________________?
How is that important for you personally?
How would that be important for us?
