We will share a powerful conversation with Betty Makoni and will explore a difficult but essential topic.

Betty Makoni is a gender activist, advocate for girls rights and founded of the Girl Child Network in Zimbabwe, a community based organization championing the rights of the girl child in all spheres of home, school and community. Her innovation of the girl child empowerment strategy is the first its kind that targets holistic individual transformation of the girls as well social transformation by focusing on Reproductive health rights, gender equality, HIV/AIDS, and empowerment.

In Betty’s words about why she is so passionate about the Girl Child Network and serving these children:

“The stories we listened to made us bleed inside, the genital wounds we later had to help nurse evoked us, the long distances we travelled every day and night to educate girls on their rights made us strong, the songs of joy and sorrow the girls sang made us more passionate, everything to do with girlhood and the fact that we were there for the girls pushed us to do even more and more from the heart, soul, mind and all. The fact that we finally claimed the girls’ spaces where the girls now live and develop, free of violence, makes it imperative that we share the great tidings.”
